What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a holistic method developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander in the late 19th century. It focuses on improving posture, reducing tension, and promoting efficient movement. By becoming more aware of how we use our bodies, we can make conscious choices that enhance our physical and mental functioning. For anyone looking to improve their vocal abilities, this means discovering a natural, free voice that resonates with ease and clarity.

For who?

This is for any person who likes to sing (notice we used the word like– you do not have to consider yourself good at it!). If you like to sing, come along and discover if you can do this with more ease! This is for people with any level of experience both in the Alexander Technique or as singers. Beginners are welcomed!

About the Teachers:

Ana-Josefina Nickelé is a renowned singer and qualified vocal teacher with a particular interest in Argentine tango. Living and working in Berlin, she has been giving singing lessons in her studios in Berlin and Wolfenbüttel since 2011. Her experience includes teaching vocal training at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig and working as a vocal trainer with the Vokalhelden, the children’s and youth choir of the Berlin Philharmonic. Training in the Alexander Technique since October 2020, Ana-Josefina is a versatile artist who shares her knowledge and passion for music and singing with her students and colleagues.

Pinelopi Sioni is an Alexander Technique, yoga, and meditation teacher who brings her knowledge of anatomy and the nervous system to all her teachings. Through a trauma-informed lens, she specializes in bringing sensitivity and fun to group dynamics and meets people ‘where they are at.’ She is at her happiest when she feels the strength and community that builds when people come together to sing.

About the Teacher:

Pinelopi embarked on her yoga journey in 1999, completing a 600-hour Hatha Yoga Teacher and Vedantic Philosophy Training course in Valencia, Spain. She founded English Yoga Berlin in 2010, and now has over 15 years of experience as a full-time yoga teacher.

She deepened her knowledge by studying Yoga Anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff. Additionally, she trained with David Moore and attended his “Injury-free yoga” workshops, integrating the Alexander Technique into yoga poses. This comprehensive training enriched her expertise in both fields.

In January of 2023, Pinelopi achieved a significant milestone by becoming a certified Alexander Technique teacher. This was an intensive training for 3.3 years, totaling 1600 hours of dedicated study with Jorg Aßhoff.

Pinelopi’s ergonomic consultations integrate anatomy, Alexander Technique, and yoga’s mind-body understanding. Her holistic approach optimizes well-being in the workplace through comprehensive guidance.

Join us for a beautiful 2.5-day retreat this September, where we will combine the Alexander Technique with meditation and yoga. The Alexander Technique promotes ease and efficiency in all our movements and use of self. So, why not apply it to meditation and yoga as well? Imagine meditating while sitting in a posture that causes less back pain or practicing yoga poses while stressing your neck less. Discover how to move with more freedom and ease in this unique, immersive experience.

Where?

This retreat takes place at the English Yoga Berlin studio. This is an urban retreat where participants sleep at home and re-convene in the morning.

What is included in the “Yoga, Meditation and Alexander Technique” retreat:

  • Three Hatha Yoga Sessions
  • Six meditation sessions
  • An introduction to the Alexander Technique
  • Walking meditations
  • Fun Alexander Technique awareness games
  • Two half hour private Alexander Technique lessons for each participant.

The retreat for the group officially starts on Friday at 14:30 and ends on Sunday at 12:30. On Friday morning, before the official group class, participants can book their first 30-minute private Alexander Technique class in one of the available slots.

The full cost of the retreat is 170 Euros.

Deposit Policy:

A joyful journey through the sounds and vibrations of our bodies based on the principles of the Alexander Technique

We welcome you to this Vibration Workshop to delve into the realm of sound within our bodies. Often, we overlook the fact that speech, song, and chant all begin with vibration. In many ancient wisdom traditions, creation itself is said to have begun with sound and vibration. We have grown and been born amidst these vibrations, including the act of listening.

In our daily lives, we tend to forget about this fundamental truth and become disconnected from our origins. We do not take the time to listen to ourselves, and we habitually think and speak without being in contact with our bodies. But what if we were to pause, inhibit our actions, and become conscious of what we are doing? What if we could experience that we could do less? What if we got to know what supporting systems we have in us?

There is a prevailing belief in our society that reaching our goals requires a considerable effort. However, what if we were wrong? What if we could accomplish things with ease? What if we could trust our bodies and acquire the tools to support that trust? And what if we were to rediscover our natural voice? If we were to explore the spaces of sound within our bodies, what kind of voice might we uncover?

This Vibration Workshop includes?

  • Vocal awakening sessions for the body: including shaking and buzzing
  • awareness and inhibition exercises and games, with partners and without
  • a guided Chakra vowel session where we learn how our thoughts can guide our voice

About the Teachers:

Sibylle Gfellner is an experienced teacher of the Alexander Technique and an assistant at the Alexander-Technik Schule in Berlin. She has also received training in bodilance (from Petra Kunz Blunert) and Bewegungsevolution (from Martina Kunstwald). Sibylle has worked on several projects with Community Schools, Hochschulsport (HU), and SPZ Charité, helping children with chronic headaches.

Finding her own voice has always been a deep longing for Sibylle. She studied theatre at INAC in Berlin and singing and had the opportunity to work with the director Carlos Medina, where she first came into contact with chakra voweling. Her research has led her on a journey from classical music (with Sam Thiel) to new music (with Fatima Miranda), as well as yodeling (with Ingrid Hammer) and Georgian singing (with Frank Kane).A great source of inspiration for Sibylle is Shrikrishna, a master of Pranayama meditation.

Beginning her yoga journey in 1999, Pinelopi completed a 600 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher and Vedantic Philosophy Training course over a period of two years in Valencia, Spain.  For the last decade, she has worked as a full-time yoga teacher in Spain and in 2010 she founded English Yoga Berlin. This training is more than an education, it is a practical learning experience to
transform your offering and the spaces you occupy.
This experience will offer you immediate tools, methods, and
interventions to instantly cultivate a more trauma-informed approach in
your current studio, classes, business, organization, and/or offerings.
It is an integrative and holistic approach to discovering the connections
between empowerment and resilience through personal exploration,
invitational language, safe space creation, supportive solutions, and
facilitating choice-making.

What is Trauma-Informed?

Trauma is an experience shared by all; whether you have experienced it
firsthand or know people who have experienced it, it is something we come
into contact with any time we work with humans. It is our responsibility to
know and understand the impacts trauma has on individuals and
communities as well as how behaviours manifest and how we can work
alongside them and support people in every field and industry. This training
gives you foundational tools and insights into what it means to be human and
interact with others in a way that promotes safety, dignity, and belonging.
Trauma-informed means taking into account past trauma and the
resulting coping mechanisms when attempting to understand the

Design the meditation Posture that fits your specific body

How to find a meditation posture with less tension through the help of the Alexander Technique

Is your back in pain when you meditate? Do your legs go numb within the first minutes or get ankle pain? Do your shoulders tense up and affect the back of your neck? Have you had a meditation teacher tell you to simply sit through the discomfort without giving you individual support for your posture?

All these things are habitual when sitting in meditation, but are they actually necessary? Freeing the mind of thoughts is difficult enough, so why not spending some time understanding how to make the posture more suitable to your individual needs?

We all have different types of flexibility, postural habits and body structures. Suggesting a one-solution fits all is not helpful in the long run. This is why we created a workshop to give both general and personalized tips on how to make the posture work for your specific body by applying Alexander Technique principles to your meditation posture.

This workshop includes:

  • Looking at the postural habits that bring about pain.
  • Understanding how to engage the feet while meditating.
  • Finding your personal meditation posture in sitting and in walking with the help of an experienced Alexander Technique teacher plus an experienced yoga teacher

Workshop on “How to set up an Ergonomic Home Office”

A workshop for people who work from home on healthy computer habits.

After almost two years of working in hybrid formats from home, it is of vital importance to learn about healthy computer habits. It is past time to shift our way of thinking and to invest some time and effort into looking at what our computer working habits are and how can we create a better working space for ourselves. I originally created this ergonomic home office workshop for businesses to help them adjust to the pandemic. However, since nearly everyone I know works with computers, I am opening it up for the second time to the general public.

It is past time to shift our way of thinking and to invest some time and effort into looking at what our computer working habits are and how can we create a better working space for ourselves.

In this two-part workshop, we look at all aspects of how to set up an ergonomic home office. I guide the participants through practices that provide good health and an increase of productivity. We look into the basics of posture, as well as back, wrist and eye care. We also explore the proportion of working while sitting, standing and walking; and the quality and frequency of our breaks. Furthermore, we examine the infrastructure used, such as the height of the table, chair, monitor, type of keyboard and mouse. The suggestions of how to improve office infrastructure include a diverse range from DIY ideas or cheap props to a glimpse of what is available on the market. The workshop is given via ZOOM and includes both mindfulness and practical exercises, as well as a short stretching session.

For Who:

This workshop is opened to everybody who works from home. You do not need to have any yoga or mindfulness experience to participate. You also do not need to have any fancy office equipment. It is designed to help you create a better working situation starting from exactly where you are.

At the beginning of the corona virus lock down it felt okay to set up an office in whatever way possible. Many of us worked from the couch, the kitchen table, and in between home schooling. No one was thinking about setting up a proper ergonomic office space at home. After all, in a couple of months everyone would be working at the ‘real’ office again, in a quiet environment without many distractions. Or so we all thought…

The lock down has now continued for over a year and it also reshaped our ways of working in general. One day, many will return to the office. Nonetheless, many others will also continue to work from home as the work situation becomes ever more flexible. As we become more aware of this fact, we realize how important it is to invest time and effort into making our home office more ergonomic.

In this two-part workshop, we look at all aspects of how to set up an ergonomic home office. This ergonomic home office workshop guides working practices that provide good health and an increase of productivity. We look into the basics of posture, as well as back, wrist and eye care. She, then, deepened her knowledge through studying Yoga Anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff . Meanwhile, she also studied with David Moore and attended several of his “Injury-free yoga” workshops of how to apply the Alexander Technique postural alignment to yoga poses.

Currently she is in her third and final year of studying with Jorg Asshof to become an Alexander Technique teacher.

Her ergonomic consultations are based on her knowledge of anatomy, alignment through the Alexander Technique, and a deep understanding of the body and mind’s needs through yoga.

Her meditation philosophy is deeply inspired by Tara Brach and especially the RAIN meditation.

How to set up an Ergonomic Home Office – a two part Workshop

This two-part online workshop will focus on how to set up an ergonomic office in your own home so to minimize pain created from long hours of working on the computer.

At the beginnings of the lock down it felt ok to not think about setting up a proper ergonomic office space in our home. After all, in a month or two we would be working from our office chair again, in a quiet environment without that many distractions…. or so we thought… But now that the lock down has gone on for nearly a year, it is past time to shift our way of thinking and to invest some time and effort into looking at what our computer working habits are and how can we create a better working space for ourselves.

In this two part workshop we will look into all aspects of how to set up an ergonomic home office that provides good health while still getting your work done. We will look into the basics of posture, as well as back, wrist and eye care. We will also look into the proportion of working while sitting, standing and walking; and the quality and frequency of your breaks. Furthermore, we will look into the infrastructure used, such as the height of the table, chair, monitor; type of keyboard and mouse. The suggestions to better your office infrastructure will include a diverse range from DIY ideas or cheap props as well as introducing you to what is available on the market. The workshop will be given on ZOOM and will include both mindfulness and practical exercises, as well as a short stretching session.

February 28th, 17.30 – 18.40 CET- PART TWO: wrist care, eye care, general environment, questions

Who:

This workshop is opened to the general public. You do not need to have any yoga or mindfulness experience to participate. You also do not need to have any fancy office equipment. It is designed to help you create a better working situation starting from exactly where you are. The workshop will be limited to 20 participants.

We spend so much time lost in our own thoughts that days pass on by without getting a moment to connect with our own presence and the things that matter to us the most. In this workshop “Beyond the Thinking Mind” we will investigate what the patterns of our minds are, and what gets in the way of experiencing ourselves differently.

A talk, a meditation and a yoga session.

  • The talk will predominately look at the mind and its patterns.  At the end we will explore ways to experience the world beyond our thinking minds.
  • We will learn a  meditation technique to quiet down the chatterbox mind, while learning to detach without repressing.
  • We will end the workshop with a yoga session to move our bodies, tune in with our breaths, and observe our minds.
